Maternity Session: FAQ | Clarksville Maternity Photographer

There is something magical about a woman who is carrying her unborn child. As a mama myself, pregnancy is such magical time for mama and the whole family. Life is about to change in the best way possible whether this is your first child or your fifth. Celebrate this special season of life by capturing these fleeting moments on camera. The most amazing time of your life can also bring added stresses and I don't want you to worry about your session. Below I cover the most frequently asked questions I get about maternity sessions. Of course there are more questions out there. If you don't see your question here, you can always email me your specific question and I would love to answer it here (and possibly also add it to this list if its something others could benefit from as well).

What should I wear to my maternity session? What if I have my significant other or family joining me?

I like to tell my clients to wear things that they feel most confident in and truly describe their style. Your "go-to" outfits are usually best. Solid colors and large patterns look great on camera. Its best to avoid any clothing items with lettering, large logos, patterns smaller than a quarter, or graphics.

It is easy to get sucked into the idea of matching for your photos, but coordinating tends to photograph best. As with any fashion statement, try to avoid clashing colors and patterns for yourself and between people in the session. Lastly, accessories always photograph well and complete an outfit, so don't hesitate to bring or wear them!

Specifically for mama to be, wear something you feel comfortable in because we all know comfort is a rare thing as pregnancy progresses. Dresses photograph really well for maternity sessions. I love when mamas wear body-con dresses so we can really showcase the bump!

How many weeks pregnant should I be when I have my maternity session?

The ideal time to have your maternity session is when you're pregnant enough to have a beautiful bump, but not SO pregnant that you're uncomfortable during the session. Typically this magic window is 28 to 36 weeks pregnant, dependent on how your pregnancy is going.

How do we choose a location for our maternity session?

This question is a big one, especially in our military town. Since a lot of people in Clarksville are moving every few years, people don't always know where they want to have their session. Even if you are local, it can be stressful and overwhelming to select a location if you're not sure what you're looking for. I am more than happy to suggest a location for your maternity session. First, when you book with me, we will talk about how you want your session to feel. From there, I will suggest specific locations and send you images of those spots for you to choose from.

Who is involved in my maternity session?

Well, that is completely up to you! This is YOUR session. Typically maternity sessions go in one of a few ways: mama on her own, parents to be together, and the whole family. However, we are not limited to those so if you would like other people in your session, bring them on!

What if my children (or spouse) are not interested in photos and act out?

I hate to break it to you, but if you're experiencing that, your family is 100% NORMAL! The most important thing to remember is they are acting this way for one of two reasons: they are nervous about being in front of the camera or they aren't sure what to expect. This is where my experience comes in handy! For the first reason, people are better in front of the camera than they know and everyone is a little nervous for the first 15-20 minutes of their session. The first 15-20 minutes allow them loosen them up and they see how much fun they are having! The second reason for acting out or being disinterested can be resolved by sitting down with your kids (or spouse) to share what your dream photoshoots look like so they can be mentally prepared for the shoot and what is involved. A great way to do this is to scroll through my blog posts and look at my previous sessions.

How will I receive my images?

Your images will be available for viewing and downloading on a password protected online digital gallery. Your link will be emailed to you with the password upon the completion of your images.

How long does it take to get my images?

Your images will be completed and uploaded to the online gallery within 2 weeks of your session, often earlier. A sneak peek of your images will be posted to facebook, my website, and the blog prior to the full gallery being completed.

What if the weather is bad?

I always check the weather when I book a session. However, let's face it, the Clarksville weather has a mind of its own and can change in an instant. If the weather causes us to cancel your portrait session, we will simply reschedule for a better day.

Am I allowed to share my photos on social media?

YES! Please do! As a photographer, I love when my clients share my images. A great way to share your session on social media is to share your session's blog post. Of course, you can also upload your images that you selected from your gallery. I do ask that when you share them you credit jkcregar photography. Please do not alter, filter, crop, or edit the images for social media.

Where do I order our maternity session prints?

I would be happy to order prints, canvases, albums, or other photographic items for you of your favorite images after your session from my professional photo lab. You can also order your images from the photo lab of your choice with your print release.
